Black Tip Reef Shark
Sharks have lived in our oceans for more than 450 million years! That’s long before dinosaurs first walked the earth. Their brains have evolved to become more intelligent and devoted to their senses mainly their ability to smell. Dwelling among the shallow coral reefs and mangroves in the Indo-Pacific and Mediterranean seas, these sharks stay in the same small areas for many years where they pick off the weakest fish to eat. Timid and skittish, the blacktip reef shark is difficult to approach and seldom poses a danger to humans unless roused by food.
Zebra Shark
Sharks have lived in our oceans for more than 450 million years! That’s long before dinosaurs first walked the earth. Their brains have evolved to become more intelligent and devoted to their senses mainly their ability to smell. Yellow brown with dark brown spots, these tropical inshore creatures can be found on sand, rubble, or coral bottoms of the continental and insular shelves. They are oviparous and lay eggs know as Mermaid Purse.
Zebra sharks are omnivorous animals and are fond of eating small fish, crabs, shrimps, and other small invertebrates.
Stingray
There are almost 500 different species of rays and skate in our oceans and rivers. Their closest relative is the shark. Just like sharks, they don’t have a bony skeleton. Instead, their skeleton is made of cartilage (just like our nose and ears!) This makes it easier for rays to glide through the ocean. To swim they flap their fins like a bird. Did you know that rays are masters of disguise? Some change color based on the colors of the seabed. With their flat body they can hide on the ocean floor to stay protected from predators. Some use their venomous spine to protect against predators too, but only if they feel under threat.
You can make more amazing discoveries about rays on your visit to SEA LIFE! Check your local SEA LIFE site to find out about your next adventure.
Jellyfish
Jellyfish are older than all of our ancient reptiles. Scientists believe they first swam in our oceans around 500 million years ago. There are more than 350 different species of jellyfish. The lion’s mane jellyfish is over two meters tall – that’s taller than you! Others are as tiny as a pinhead. They can be found in all of our oceans and sometimes in freshwater too.
Jellyfish have venomous tentacles that they use to capture their prey. Most jellyfish are harmless to humans, but a few including the box jellyfish can cause a painful sting. Sometimes baby fish will also live in jellyfish tentacles for protection. At SEA LIFE you’ll be able to see jellyfish in a whole new light! Check your local SEA LIFE site to see the jellyfish encounters they have waiting for you.
Seahorses at Legoland Malaysia Johor
You can find seahorses in oceans all over the world. There are over 40 species. Pigmy seahorses are as tiny as your little fingernail, but big-belly seahorses will be even bigger than your hand. Their ancient greek name is Hippocampus, which means ‘horse sea monster’. But we don’t think our seahorses are monsters at all!
Unfortunately, seahorses are at risk of extinction due to the pollution and destruction of their habitat. 150 million seahorses are also captured and killed every year to use in traditional medicine. SEA LIFE helps protect seahorses – You can discover these amazing creatures as you journey into your visit. Many of our aquariums have unique and rare species, including weedy and leafy sea dragons!
