    Scientific: Dermochelys Coriacea

Leatherback turtle is the largest and the oldest of all sea turtle species in the world. It has been around for more than 150 million years. The leatherback gets its name from its shell, which is like a thick leathery skin, with the texture of hard rubber with seven longitudinal ridges. The carapace is black with white pale spots. The leatherback turtle ranges in size from 1.2 meters to 2.4 meters in length and weighs between 225 kg to 900 kg. They can dive to depths of 1,280 meters; deeper than any other turtle and can stay down for up to 85 minutes.

Leatherbacks feed primarily on soft bodied animals like jellyfish, sea urchins, squid, mollusks, crustaceans, tunicates, fish, blue-green algae, floating seaweed other marine creatures. They don’t have teeth, instead possessing spines throughout their throats which stop prey from escaping after being eaten. Female leatherbacks may lay 4 to 5 times per season, each time depositing 60 to 120 eggs. Leatherbacks appear to nest once every two or three years with an incubation period of approximately 60 days.

Green Sea Turtle: Facts and Conservation

    Scientific: Chelonia Mydas

They are called green turtles because of the color of the flesh. Chelonia mydas are one of the largest turtles, ranging 1.5 meters in length and they can weigh up to 200 kg. They have limbs that are paddle-like, which are used to swim. Their heads seem small compared to their body size. Males are larger than females and the tail is longer, extending well beyond the shell. The carapace can be olive to brown, or sometimes black, depending on the geographic location of the species. Green turtles cannot pull their heads inside of their shells.

Adults are almost exclusively herbivorous. They eat only seagrasses, algae and marine invertebrates. This diet is thought to give them greenish colored fat. The Green nest at intervals of about every 2 years, with wide year to year fluctuations in numbers if nesting females. They nest between 3 to 5 times each season. They lay an average of 115 eggs in each nest. The incubation period lasts 50 to 70 days.

    Other Turtle Species

    Hawksbill Turtle

    (Scientific: Eretmochelys Imbricata)
The Hawksbill is one of the smaller sea turtles. Hawksbills get their common name from their tapered heads, which end in a sharp point resembling a bird’s beak. The shape of the mouth allows the hawksbill turtle to reach into holes and crevices of coral reefs to find sponges, their primary food source as adults, and other invertebrates.

Color is a dark greenish brown with a marbled or radiating pattern. The plastron is yellow and hinge-less. The head scales are black to chestnut brown in the center, with lighter margins. The chin and throat are yellow. Adults have an olive green or brown carapace (upper shell) with reddish brown, brown or black markings in a tortoiseshell pattern. Hawksbills grow up to about 114 centimeter in in carapace length and
45kg – 70 kg in weight for an average adult but can grow as large as 90 kg.

They are normally found near reefs rich in the sponges they like to feed on. Hawksbills are omnivorous and will also eat mollusks, marine algae, crustaceans, sea urchins, fish, and jellyfish.

    Scientific: Lepidochelys Olivacea

The Olive Ridley Turtle spends most of its time within 15 km of shore, preferring shallow seas for is feeding and sunbathing. However, this species is observed in the open ocean as well

A small sea turtle with a round, flat carapace length averaging 60 to 70 cm. With large, triangular head, and an olive to grayish green carapace. The skin is gray, and the plastron is light greenish yellow or whitish. There are two pairs of prefrontal and usually 5 – 9 costal shields on the sides, the first pair coming into contact with the nuchal. Males have longer thicker tails than females and well-developed curved claws on the forelimbs.

Adults Olive Ridleys weigh ranged from 35 to 50 kg. Olive ridley sea turtles are strong divers and have been known to dive up to 150 meters in search of crabs, sea urchins and other bottom-dwelling creatures. They also roam widely in the open ocean in search of sea jellies. Many females reproduce every year, but some nest every 2 – 3 years, usually from 1 – 2 times per season, every 14 – 30 days.

Nesting occurs mostly at night, but diurnal nesting also occurs. A female crawl onto the nesting beach, scoops a body pit, then digs a nest and lays a clutch of 30 – 170 eggs, which she covers with sand before crawling back into the ocean. The whole procedure takes less than an hour

Aman Tioman Beach Resort: Things to do from Official Information

    Jungle Trekking

Explore and trek the lush rainforests of Tioman Island. Immerse yourself in nature and learn about the various flora and fauna of the island.

Engage with our island trekking tours and immerse yourself fully in nature. Our guides will provide guests with a safe trekking experience and ensure a pleasant journey in the forests. During the treks, guests can learn about the various flora and fauna native to the island. As Tioman Island is home to a wide variety of rare animals, it provides a chance for guests to see animals such as macaques and black giant squirrels. The silence of the forests along with chirps of birds and insects, will definitely leave our guests in a state of harmony and being at one with nature.

    Untouched Nature

Although Tioman is one of East Malaysia’s most commercially developed islands, some of its natural beauty still remains – many parts of the island are completely untouched by resorts, pollution and rubbish, and thus draw thousands upon thousands of tourists every week who are looking to experience Southeast Asia’s natural beauty.

Imagine walking through verdant green forests, with the chirping and hooting noises of animals all around you, the rich smell of flowers and loam, and the crunching of leaves underfoot. It is a truly ethereal experience, elevated by the knowledge that these are the good times – and a sight like this a precious thing not long for this world. If you want to experience something like this, then Aman Tioman Resort is right here waiting for your arrival.

    Forest Treks

Tioman Island has a number of forest treks that take you from one kampong to another. Navigation is easy – as long as you follow the power lines and make it out of the forest by dark, as there is little risk of getting lost. In recent years, all cases of missing tourists have been found and accounted for, and all were attributed to other reasons rather than misadventure. Since the year 2000, no one has ever become seriously lost in Tioman Island’s forests.

    Experienced Guides

Of course, you don’t have to go wandering off into jungle by yourself. Aman Tioman Resort can provide you forest guides well versed in the ways of the forest, who are intimately familiar with its flora, fauna, environments and its hazards. Many of our guides are local, and there can be no better person to guide you through this parlous landscape.

Dining at Aman Tioman Beach Resort

Aman Tioman Beach Resort: More Activities

Fishing / Angling in Aman Tioman Beach Resort

Known famously by local and foreign anglers alike, Tioman Island boasts an abundant amount of trophy fish for anglers to take on. Examples include Sailfish, Black Marlin, Barracuda, Bonefish, Cobia, Dorado, Groupers, Narrow-barred Spanish Mackerel and more! Guests will be treated to a luxury experience as they will be fishing on a 32ft Boston Whaler fully loaded with modern electronics, necessary safety equipment, full bathroom and an air-conditioned cabin for rest when required.

    Unique and Exotic Fish Species

The waters around Tioman Island are perfect for recreational and sports fishing – as one of the last bastions of marine biodiversity in East Malaysia, Tioman Island is home to thousands of rare, beautiful and exotic fish species.

Many of these species have disappeared from the other parts of the world where they used to reside, and can now only be found on island reefs on the East Malaysian Coast such as the reefs around Tioman Island– so Tioman Island is perfect for sports fishing enthusiasts looking for that extra special fishing experience. Only in Tioman, can you find fish this special!

    100% Legal and Ethical

For those worried about the legality of fishing in Tioman, no worries! Although Tioman Island used to be designated as a protected area under Malaysian law, many such areas have since been un-gazetted by the Malaysian government in order to help local businesses, so most of the island is free game for all you sports fishing fans! There are many designated marine park zones, but they only extend up to a mile beyond the Tioman Island land area.

    A Beautiful Day

Time’s arrow never ceases, and all things must pass – but we all know that moments last forever. Just imagine the wonderful moments you can create if you go sports fishing near Tioman Island. There is a chance, that you will be the lucky one to catch the final specimen of a once great species. The day is bright and breezy, and the waves are calm.

You hold up a big beautiful fish – rare and exotic – and smile for the camera. The camera flashes, and you, along with the fish, are immortalized forever in that frozen moment of history. An island like Tioman Island, so rich in marine biodiversity, provides sports fishers a good chance of lasting fame in the annals of sports fishing history.

    Fish Species

Of course, rare fish aren’t the only kinds of fish you’ll find on Tioman Island. Sports fishers can also look forward to the more common varieties, such as Sailfish, Black Marlin, Barracuda, Bonefish, Cobia, Dorado, Groupers, Narrow-barred Spanish Mackerel and more! The Grouper in particular would be a sought-after catch – the relative rarity and price of Groupers have only gone up in recent years, as they have become less and less common in the South China Sea. You’re sure to be the envy of your peers if you happen to snag a good large one!

    Luxury

If you stay at Aman Tioman Resort, you won’t just have the opportunity to catch rare fish – you’ll also get to do all of your fishing in style and comfort. For our round island snorkeling, guests will be guided to tour around 5 different side areas of Tioman Island. Guests will be given around 30 to 40 minutes to snorkel around an area before moving on to the next. Availability of the tours will depend on the weather and sea conditions of the various areas at the time, along with the availability of our boats. Float along the surface to observe exotic fish and colorful corals in the jade-like water under the sun, and you’ll find that jewels of the ocean come in more shades than gems of the lands.
