My family and I have a wonderful stay at the Heritage Hotel Cameron Highlands. It is a lovely hotel perched at a quiet corner of Tanah Rata. Its central location makes rides to the Strawberry Farm in Brinchang and Tea Plantation in Sungai Palas a breeze. The room that we stayed in airy, and we have a nice view of the Tanah Rata town. My children had great fun plucking fresh strawberries. Overall, it is a comfortable hotel that have good amenities, children playroom, reading room, snooker table for the family. Cameron Highlands Resort has the reputation of being the definitive 5-star luxury hotel in the region and the rumours turned out to be wonderfully spot on! For me, it was my first stop on an 11-day road trip within Cameron Highlands that included five hotel reviews, exploring night markets, and searching for the best high tea in the hills. While there are special details I loved at the other properties, this YTL hotel ticked almost every box for what I consider essential for a perfect stay. I was able to relax, unwind, dine in style, and feel pampered to a legendary degree every moment of my time there.

It’s Wonderfully Charming! From the moment you walk through the doors, you’ll be welcomed by impeccably dressed staff with beaming smiles. They alone make the stay memorable. Yet when you add to that the architecture and colonial charm of the place, it makes you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time and into a very decadent period of old-world grace.

The Spa Village! Oh heavens, the spa! I booked in for a two-hour treatment and three hours later I emerged as jello. From the tea and rose bath to the body scrub and massage, the Rose Garden treatment is top notch, and I almost couldn’t fault a single thing (something unusual for me after almost 75 spa reviews).

Their Culinary Offering! There’s a fine dining restaurant, an elegantly chilled lounge, a bar with billiards, and even a steamboat restaurant set amongst a bamboo garden. I dined in during my entire stay and my favourites were the chicken pie in the lounge and the oh-my-GAWD tomato soup with flakey crust in The Dining Room. Seriously, I ordered that soup both nights!

Afternoon Tea! Homemade scones, wildly rich whipped cream, savoury and sweet snacks, and premium tea, all served traditionally in a beautiful setting. And at only 80 Ringgits per couple, it’s an absolute must.

It’s an older hotel and you have to go into it knowing that. I think they need to replace the balcony doors with modern ones that keep the noise out personally, so I was grateful to have earplugs with me. Oh and be sure to bring warm pijamas and warm clothes, I froze my buns off there, but it was because I hadn’t realized the climate difference and hadn’t packed properly. Once the sun goes down, so does any warmth in the air.

Built in 1939, The Smokehouse Hotel is one of the oldest commercial buildings in Cameron Highlands. The Tudor-style building was once a place for British colonial officers to find room and board in cool climate and reminisce about home.

When I posted my check in at The Smokehouse Hotel Cameron Highlands on Facebook, I was amazed to learned that three of my friends (a Spaniard, a Brit, and a German) had also stayed there during the past 30 years. All three loved it and had wonderful memories of their time there just like I do now. Built in the 1930s in traditional British country home style, The Smokehouse Hotel Cameron Highlands has the #1 best gardens of any hotel in all of Cameron Highlands. In fact, during my stay countless people came to enjoy afternoon tea simply to sit in the pretty gardens and go crazy on Instagram.

Why You’ll Love The Smokehouse Hotel Cameron Highlands

1. The Rooms! I was on the 1st floor in Squire and my suite was wildly large, homey, and with a view of green foothills that touched bright blue skies. Over the years it has been featured in Elle, Vogue, and countless other magazines around the world. There’s a new building at The Smokehouse Hotel Cameron Highlands so take my advice and ONLY book into the main house, that’s where the true charm of the property lies.
2. The Garden! Honestly, I’ve never spent so much time outdoors like I did at The Smokehouse Hotel Cameron Highlands. The gardens are the prettiest I’ve seen in ages and completely reminiscent of something out of Alice in Wonderland! I dined outside for lunch twice and enjoyed afternoon tea there as well, always in a different spot.
3. High Tea! Afternoon tea at The Smokehouse Hotel Cameron Highlands is a simple affair, comprised of a truly lovely setting with a pot of tea + homemade, fresh scones with jams and whipped cream. It’s definitely a must!
4. The Bar! Sipping wine with a raging fire at your feet is just the ticket when it cools down across the hills of the Cameron Highlands. The bartender is a lovely chap who can whip up mean cocktails and tell a good story to boot!

Final Thoughts:

I slept like a baby at The Smokehouse Hotel Cameron Highlands! My biggest complaints were not having a safe in the room, which was something I never expected (honestly, if anything ever happened to my external hard drive, I’d be in trouble, so I ended up carrying it around with me everywhere).

Second, generally speaking I wasn’t a fan of the food. They take English dishes and put a twist on them instead of making them from the highest quality ingredients in a traditional manner. For example, the beef Wellington was prepared with a rolled-up steak instead of a single cut of tenderloin. Although with that said, I think if you haven’t spent time in the UK, you won’t know the difference, and I could see it was quite a popular spot.
