    Kellie’s castle was named after its owner William Kellie Smith a Scottish planter. The castle was designed to replicate the great British Raj palaces in India with Moorish style arches and windows. He built the castle for his beloved wife, Agnes but was not completed when he died in 1926.

    Kellie’s Castle was meant to be a home away from home for Scottish Planter, William Kellie Smith in the 20th century. Being far away from home, Kellie desired his new residence to be reminiscent of his home back in Scotland. The castle is perched on top of a hill in what used to be a rubber estate.

    William Kellie Smith was an interesting man who was popular with his South Indian workers. Kind at heart, he erected a Hindu shrine for his workers on the castle premises. As a token of appreciation, his workers erected a statue of Kellie complete with a white suit and hat.

    Kellie’s Sudden Death

    Construction of this unique castle began in 1915. However, it came to an abrupt halt with Kellie’s sudden death in 1926. The solitary castle, looks almost surreal in these wild plantations of Perak, it projects a strong personality and an aura of mystery.

    Recently, efforts have been made by the Perak State Government to rescue this magnificent structure from the encroaching foliage. Besides being haunted, the castle is believed to have hidden rooms and secret underground tunnels.

    The road that leads to Kellie’s Castle follows the contours of the land in a dizzying, maze-like fashion, adding to the mystery and romance of the place.

    Sejarah Kellie’s Castle, Batu Gajah Malaysia

    Pada awal tahun 1890-an, pengusaha British juga telah membuka estet-estet getah di sekitar Batu Gajah. Antaranya ialah Ladang Kinta Kellas, Ladang Kinta Valley, Ladang Harewood, Ladang Sengat dan lain-lain. Antara pengusaha British yang paling terkenal di Batu Gajah ialah William Kellie Smith dan Alma Baker.

    William Kellie Smith berasal dari sebuah kampung bernama Kellas di bahagian timur laut Scotland. Beliau datang ke Tanah Melayu pada tahun 1890 ketika berusia 20 tahun.

    Semasa di Pulau Pinang, beliau berkenalan dengan Alma Baker, seorang kontraktor di Kinta. Beliau kemudiannya berjaya di Batu Gajah sebagai pengusaha ladang getah Kellas Estate, Kinta Kellas Estate, dan lombong bijih timah Kinta Kellas Dredging Company.

    Kenali Kellie Smith dan Kellie’s Castle Secret Tunnel

    Di zaman kegemilangannya, hartawan Kellie Smith telah membina sebuah bangunan yang besar dan indah bagi kediaman keluarganya. Bangunan yang diberi nama Kellas House mula dibina pada tahun 1910. Bangunan tiga tingkat itu dibina mengikut rupabentuk sebuah istana di India.

    Tukang-tukangnya dibawa khas dari Madras. Bangunan yang mempunyai 14 bilik, sebuah cellar dan terowong rahsia itu juga akan dilengkapkan dengan lift iaitu yang pertama di Tanah Melayu. Di tingkat kedua, akan dibina sebuah padang tenis dengan lantai simen.

    Berita mengenai bangunan itu pernah disiarkan dalam akhbar London Financier pada 15 September 1911. Akhbar itu menyifatkan rumah ketua pengurus Ladang Kellas itu mungkin yang paling unik di seluruh Timur Jauh, baik dari segi bentuk mahupun besarnya.

    Spanish Flu dan Tarikan Kellie’s Castle

    Apabila Perang Dunia Pertama tamat, sejenis wabak Spanish Flu merebak dari Eropah ke Asia, sampai Tanah Melayu dan juga Ladang Kellas. Ramai pekerja ladang dijangkiti wabak itu meninggal dunia. Ketua pekerja meminta Kellie Smith membina sebuah kuil supaya mereka boleh mendoakan keselamatan pekerja dari wabak tersebut.

    Kellie Smith fasih bertutur bahasa Tamil dan Melayu. Beliau mengarahkan semua tukang yang sedang membina Kellas House supaya membina sebuah kuil baru di kawasan ladang berhampiran dengan jalan raya.

    Di bumbung kuil itu terdapat sebaris patung dewa Hindu dan di tengah-tengah barisan tersebut terdapat sebuah patung yang memakai pakaian pengurus ladang bangsa Eropah dengan topi putih. Kuil tersebut masih digunakan oleh pekerja Ladang Kinta Kellas hingga ke hari ini.

    Walau bagaimanapun bangunan Kellas House tidak dapat disiapkan pembinaannya apabila Kellie Smith meninggal dunia di Lisbon, Portugal pada 11 Disember 1926 ketika berusia 56 tahun.

    Sungguhpun Kellas House atau Kellie’s Castle itu hanya seperti bangunan dalam keadaan ‘sedang dibina’, namun keunikannya menjadi salah satu tarikan pengunjung ke Batu Gajah kini.

    Kellie’s Castle: Wikipedia Information

    Kellie’s Castle (sometimes also called Kellie’s Folly) is a castle located in Batu Gajah, Kinta District, Perak, Malaysia. The unfinished, ruined mansion, was built by a Scottish planter named William Kellie-Smith. According to differing accounts, it was either a gift for his wife or a home for his son.[citation needed] Kellie’s Castle is situated beside the Raya River (Sungai Raya), which is a small creek to the Kinta River.

    History

    In 1915, with the birth of his son and heir Anthony, Kellie-Smith started planning for a huge castle with Scottish, Moorish, and Tamilvanan Indian architecture.

    Kellie-Smith brought in 70 craftsmen Tamilvanan from Madras, India. All the bricks and marble were imported from India, too. Included in the plan for the 6-storey tower was Malaysia’s first elevator, an indoor tennis court and a rooftop courtyard for entertaining.

    During construction, a virulent strain of Spanish flu struck his workmen. When his workmen approached him to build a temple nearby, Kellie-Smith readily agreed. In return for his generosity, they built a statue of him beside the other deities on the lord murugan temple wall. It is believed that a tunnel was built to the temple from the castle.

    (Descendants of the Tamil labourers brought over to Malaya to work on the mansion still live nearby even now.)

    William Kellie-Smith died at the age of 56 of pneumonia during a short trip to Lisbon, Portugal in 1926. William’s wife was devastated and decided to move back to Scotland; construction on the castle was never completed by Tamilvanan workers. In the end, Kellas House, later known as “Kellie’s Folly” or “Kellie’s Castle,” was sold to a British company called Harrisons and Crosfield.

    Who haunts Kellie’s Castle?

    The Mystery of Kellies Castle Batu Gajah Malaysia

    Looming over the Batu Gajah countryside, Kellie’s Castle is an imposing brick structure to behold. It was built by Scotsman William Kellie Smith, who made his fortune in the rubber plantations of Malaysia.

    The mansion featured a tower, hidden tunnels, claustrophobic spiral staircases built as escape routes and what could have been the country’s first elevator. But Smith never finished the castle. He contracted pneumonia on a trip back to Europe to collect his elevator and died in Lisbon, aged 56.

    The castle was left to ruin before it was refurbished and opened to the public by the government. Some visit to see a piece of history while others come to find its possible supernatural inhabitants.

    The Malaysian Insight was given a special after-dark tour of the castle by its current manager, Zamari Muhyi, who regaled us with spooky tales that he and guests have experienced.

    After Smith’s death, his wife sold the estate and packed up her family to return to England. Despite sightings of apparitions believed to be Smith and his little girl, Helen, none of them died in Malaysia. So who really haunts Kellie’s Castle?

    Menara Condong Teluk Intan Is Malaysia Leaning Tower of Pisa

    Menara Condong Teluk Intan Malaysia is 25 meter high tower in the small Perak town of Telok Intan is Malaysia’s answer to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is not as old, nor as tall, nor as famous as its Italian counterpart but it does have a distinct incline and that makes a curiosity worth visiting.

    Menara Condong Teluk Intan Leaning Tower Perak Malaysia was constructed in 1885 by Mr. Leong Choon Cheong and some Ceylonese contractors. It was built primarily to store water for local usage during the dry season and in case of fire. Since it began leaning over due to soft soil foundations, Menara Condong Teluk Intan Leaning Tower has become a tourist attraction.

    Menara Condong Teluk Intan Leaning Tower Perak Malaysia is a 3 storey brick construction with a large steel water tank at the upper level. From the outside however it has been disguised to look like an 8 storey Chinese pagoda. Local people contributed to buy the clock from James W. Benson, Turret Clock Makers of Ludgate Hill, London. It still works and chimes every 15 minutes.

    About Menara Condong Teluk Intan Malaysia

    One of the main attractions is the Leaning Clock Tower. Menara Condong Teluk Intan was built by a Chinese architect Mr. Leong Choon Cheong and it also acts as a reservoir to supply water to the residents and also acts as a clock tower.

    This tower no longer holds water but the clock still functions and chimes every 15 minutes. The area surrounding the tower has been restored with bricks and now is being used as a plaza for various formal or informal activities.

    A road in the city centre of Teluk Intan is named Jalan Ah Cheong to recognize Mr Leong Choon Cheong who builts that tower.

    Menara Condong Teluk Intan: The Location

    This clock tower is situated between the intersection of the square plaza which is Jalan Pasar and Jalan Ah Cheong with Jalan Selat and Jalan Bandar on left and right side of tower.

    Menara Condong Teluk Intan is built in 1892.

    Architect

    Unknown but according to records, “A hundred years of Ceylonese in Malaysia and Singapore” (1867-1967), Mr S.Sabapathy (Asst Engineer), P.W.D. Teluk Intan, helped in the construction.

    List of Donors

    A Chinese contractor known as Leong Choon Cheong and a Ceylonese contractor built and were the main donors. Donations from the residents purchased the Key Clock from London made by J.W Benson-Ludgatehill London.

    The Purpose of Building Menara Condong Teluk Intan

    Through research made on the Leaning Clock Tower that was known as Tall Clock, the reasons and motives of building it was as follows:

    • as a fire extinguisher in case of fire
    • as a reservoir for the residents in case of drought
    • to commemorate the British Administration
    • as Timekeeper and identity of Teluk Intan

    History of Ownership

    When contractor Leong Choon Cheong wanted to build this clock tower, it was undeniable that the British was the owner and the administrator at that time. After independence in 1957, this clock tower automatically becomes national property and now it is under the authority of Perak Government.

    During the Japanese administration, this building was used by the Japanese soldiers as a control tower to watch for enemies.

    Description of Style

    With careful examination, the Leaning Clock Tower has the biggest influence of Chinese Architecture. This is because of the Pagoda concept. Even if it was built during the British administration, the Chinese influence, donors and contractors succeeded to fight for their culture.

    It is obviously shown on the external façade like the gate, tiled roof and its tiled decorations, proves how rich the Chinese architectural and culture are. From the outside, this building looks like it is an eight (8) storey building; but actually, it only has three (3) floors.

    This clock tower has 110 steps that connect each floor that is 15.5′ high. The wonders of this building architecture is that it is made from wood and stone structure; there is a passage which is 6’ft wide with a 2’ft wide wall that is decorated with green stones.

    The detailed architectural and the planning of space can be seen from the adaption of its usage as a water tank on the 3rd floor that was made from pieces of steel as high as 16 ft and volume of 680 cubic feet. The bottom part on the building measures at central line 43 ft and it stands at 27ft upwards.

    Leaning Factor

    The building was built on a soft land structure and also the weight of the water tank that was holding water made it lean to the west.

    Walk: The LEANING TOWER of Teluk Intan, Perak – a National Heritage

    Menara Condong Teluk Intan Leaning Tower Perak Malaysia

    Built at the end of the 19th century, the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan or Menara Condong Teluk Intan in Bahasa Malaysia; was built to be a water tower to keep a reservoir for the dry season or in case of fire. Unfortunately, the ground was too soft to support the tower’s weight, which caused it to tilt or lean.

    Location wise, the Leaning Tower is in the center of a square surrounded by Jalan Pasar, Jalan Selat, Jalan Bandar and Jalan Ah Cheong. I personally find the best angle to view the leaning tower is from the Hong Leong Bank direction towards the tower.

    The tower is truly a sight to behold at night when it’s illuminated in a multi-color sequence. Definitely Teluk Intan’s most iconic landmark by a long mile. If you are visiting, do check out the many stores surrounding the leaning tower.

    The fishermen live in scattered settlements on the eastern side, facing the town of Lumut and Teluk Batik.     History Pulau Pangkor Malaysia

    Historically, Pangkor was a refuge for local fishermen, merchants and pirates. In the 17th century, the Dutch built a fort to control the Perak tin trade known as the Dutch Fort. In 1874, it was the location of a historical treaty between the British government and a contender for the Perak throne (the Pangkor Treaty), which began the British colonial domination of the Malay Peninsula.

    The old British name for the Pangkor Island group was the Dindings.

    In 2003, Marina Island (a man-made island) was developed by the Marina Island Group of companies and began operation in 2010, with private investment of 250 million ringgit million by 2013.

    The integrated mixed development resort island consists of waterfront residential properties, a new jetty (Marina Island Jetty), a private commercial marina called Pangkor Marina Malaysia, service apartments, hotels and shop offices. The jetty has a ferry service which connects to the island.

    2004-2014 was a period of high growth and development for the island and the surrounding district.[4] In 2006, a biotechnology centre, a joint venture of Global Hi-Q Malaysia S/B and Hi-Q Bio-Tech International (Taiwan) Ltd began operations with initial investments of 100 million ringgit (USD 30 million). Their operations include fish farming and aquaculture, and the first harvest was expected in 2009.

    On 19 February 2010, the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, visited the island.

Sultan Idris Murshidul Al-Adzam Shah commissioned in 1913 the construction of a mosque of great beauty to fulfill a vow made upon his recovery from an illness.

    The Ubudiah Mosque was completed in 1917, after the death of Sultan Idris, and was opened by his successor, Sultan Abdul Jalil Kamaratullah Shah (1916-1918). Occupied with four 126ft height towers and circulated with 60feets domes. The walls and floors were made of red and white marble which is specially imported from Italy and London.

    Additions have been made recently to accommodate a larger congregation. However, details of the original design were retained to preserve the mosque’s character. The Ubudiah Mosque imposing structure is now a symbol of great pride to all Muslims in the state of Perak, Land of Grace.

    Masjid Ubudiah – ranking high on the list of Malaysia’s most beautiful mosques, the Masjid Ubudiah (or Ubudiah Mosque) stands proudly and majestically in Kuala Kangsar, with its golden dome and minarets creating a spellbinding sight, from near and afar.

    The mosque was designed by Arthur Benison Hubback, a government architect who is notably credited for the design of the Ipoh railway station and the Kuala Lumpur railway station.

    Built in 1913 during the reign of the 28th Sultan of Perak, Sultan Idris Murshidul Adzam Shah I Ibni Almarhum Raja Bendahara Alang Iskandar Teja, the Masjid Ubudiah is located beside the Royal Mausoleum on Bukit Chandan.

    It was commissioned on the orders of the Sultan, who vowed that he would build a mosque of great beauty as thanksgiving for recovery from an illness which plagued him in those early days.

    The construction of the mosque was not without difficulties. Work was interrupted several times, once when two elephants belonging to the sultan’s and Raja Chulan were fighting and ran over and damaged the imported Italian marble titles.

    The mosque was finally completed in late 1917 at a total cost of RM200,000 – quite an astronomical figure for those days. It was officially declared open by Sultan Abdul Jalil Karamtullah Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Idris Murshidul Adzam Shah I Rahmatullah, successor to Sultan Idris.

    This imposing structure is now a symbol of great pride to all Muslims in the state of Perak.

    Masjid Ubudiah, Perak is the most beautiful mosque in Perak is situated besides the Bukit Chandan Royal Mausoleum, Kuala Kangsar. Ubidiah Mosque was built at the royal command of Sultan Idris Murshidul Azam Shah, the 28th Sultan Perak (1887 – 1916) to fulfil his Royal Highness’ religious vow.

    Perak Government then instructed Colonel Huxley from the Public Services Office in Kuala Lumpur to design the plan for the Ubudiah Mosque. The responsibility fell to Hubbeclk, a civil architect, and the building of the mosque was the responsibility of Caulfield who was Perak chief engineer at that time.

    On Friday, 26 September 1913, Sultan Idris Murshidul Azam Shah, set the foundation stone for the mosque. The building activity was interrupted for a few years due to the damage to the marbles caused by two elephants belonging to Sultan Idris and Raja Chulan.

    The order of the marbles from Italy was interrupted caused by the World War I.

    In 1917, the mosque was officially opened by Sultan Abdul Jalil Nasaruddin Shah, who replaced Sultan Idris who passed away in 1916. The cost of building the Ubidiah Mosque at that time was estimated at RM200,000.

    The Lenggong Archaeology Museum is an open air museum which houses numerous historical artifacts dating some 1.3 million years ago. The Lenggong Valley was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 30th June 2012.

    Lenggong Archaeological Museum or Kota Tampan Archaeological Museum is located in Kota Tampan, near Lenggong. It is a pre-historical site dating back 74,000 years ago.

    The city of Lenggong is located 100 kilometers to the north of Ipoh, through Kuala Kangsar (onwards to Grik). It is recognised as one of the oldest site of human activity in West Malaysia. Lenggong Archaeological Museum also displays ‘Perak Man’, the oldest human skeleton found in Peninsular Malaysia in the caves nearby. This skeleton is dated 10,000 to 11,000 years from the Stone age, starting in the Palaeolithic era.

    Lenggong Valley: Unesco World Heritage Sites Malaysia

    Situated in the lush Lenggong Valley, the property includes four archaeological sites in two clusters which span close to 2 million years, one of the longest records of early man in a single locality, and the oldest outside the African continent. It features open-air and cave sites with Palaeolithic tool workshops, evidence of early technology. The number of sites found in the relatively contained area suggests the presence of a fairly large, semi-sedentary population with cultural remains from the Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Metal ages.

    Outstanding Universal Value – Brief synthesis

    The lush Lenggong Valley on the Malay Peninsula contains evidence in open-air and cave sites along the Perak River spanning all the periods of hominid history outside Africa from 1.83 million to 1,700 years ago.

    Undisturbed in situ Palaeolithic stone tool workshops are located on the shores of a paleolake and ancient river gravel beds and dated in a long chronological sequence.

    A meteorite strike 1.83 million b.p. blocked and diverted the river preserving Palaeolithic tools at Bukit Bunuh, where hand axes are among the oldest so far discovered outside Africa. Analysis suggests these were made by hominids which thus provide an extremely early date for hominid presence in South-East Asia.

    A catastrophic Toba volcanic eruption 70,000 b.p. caused abandonment of a workshop site containing multiple tool types at Kota Tampan. Other workshop sites date from 200,000-100,000 BP at Bukit Jawa, 40,000 BP at Bukit Bunuh and 1000 BP at Gua Harimau.

    The relative abundance of these sites hints at a relatively large or semi sedentary population.

    Perak Man was discovered within Gua Gunung Runtuh cave. Perak Man is South-East Asia’s oldest most complete human skeleton. It is radiocarbon dated to 10,120 BP and identified as Australomelanesoid, a hominid type occupying the western part of the Indonesia archipelago and continental South-East Asia at the end of the Pleistocene and early Holocene.

    Within the large karst outcrop of Bukit Kepala Gajah are 20 caves. Three of these, Gua Gunung Runtuh, Gua Teluk Kelawar and Gua Kajang, have revealed prehistoric burials.

    Together these four sites in two clusters sites represent the sequence of significant stages in human history unrivalled in the region.

    Criterion (iii) : The series of cave and open air sites along the Perak River in the Lenggong Valley is an exceptional testimony to occupation of the area particularly during the Palaeolithic era, but also during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods from 1.83 million years ago to 1,700 years ago.

    Criterion (iv) : The undisturbed in situ Palaeolithic stone tool workshops located on the shores of a paleolake and ancient river gravel beds and dated in a long chronological sequence are an outstanding ensemble of lithic technology.

    Kuala Sepetang (Jawi: كوالا سيڤيتڠ; Chinese: 十八丁) is a coastal town located in Larut, Matang and Selama District, Perak, Malaysia. Also known by English-speaking locals as Port Weld (Chinese: Chinese: 砵威) after a former Governor, Frederick Weld.

    It is a thriving fishing village, and the main jumping-off point to the river mouth community of Kuala Sangga, which is a Chinese fishing community at the river mouth which specializes in fish breeding in cages. The Port Weld railway station was located at the centre of town.

    The whole railway line from here to Taiping, which was the first railway line in the Peninsular, is now dismantled, and now only the ticketing booth and the Port Weld railway signboard remain. The ticketing booth is now a Chinese coffee shop, and the shopowner has been maintaining the railway signboard.

    Kuala Sepetang has seafood and it has a restaurant situated on the upper floor of a shop lot overlooking the river. Kuala Sepetang is also well known for its mangrove swamp reserve park which is open to the public daily. It has a boardwalk built over the swamp for tourists, and chalets in which tourists can rent to stay the night on the riverfront.

    There are also charcoal kilns, some of which are open for tourist visits. Besides fishing village, charcoal kiln and mangroves to enjoy, one can take a boat tour along the mangrove river to see fireflies at night and eagles.

    The village is very popular with its Curry Mee (Only sold at afternoon time) and Pau.

    Kuala Sepetang is also famous for Prawn Noodle, also known as Mee Udang, run by many Malay stalls.

    Perak Museum – The Background

    This museum is the oldest museum in Peninsular Malaysia. It is located in the town of Taiping, about 85 km from Ipoh, the capital of Perak. It is also near the Taiping Jail and about 3 km from town. Most of the museum’s earlier collections are ethnological and anthropological items. Geological, botanical and enthamobological collections make up additional specimens.

    To date, the total of accumulated collections is 8,474, consisting of 5,074 cultural collections, 523 nature collections and 2,877 miscellaneous collections, including archaeological items. The Perak Museum is rich in ethnological, historical, archaeological and ethamobological collections.

    Some of them are classified as rare collections over a hundred years oTaiping Lake Gardens, Perak Malaysiald such as animal species like the “benturong” and “pulasan”, skeletons and scores of animal skeletons and smoked clay which are either extinct or extremely hard to find. Most of these collections and artifacts are displayed in the museum’s four main galleries housed in an almost 120-year-old building.

    It was built in 1883 and maintains an ancient British architectural concept of the Art Dico kind.

    The Nature Gallery exhibits all kinds of animal, bird, fish, snail and herberium species, all of which are housed in unique exhibition cases aged over a hundred years old. They are also placed in various kinds of dioramas which records a British-style presentation method while retaining a wild habitat environment that is both interesting and full of great ecstatic elements.

    The Cultural Gallery displays collections and artifacts from various types of handiworks, handicrafts and weavings of the Malaysian people, especially from Perak, such as a unique weaving made by the Sultan of Perak’s mother. Weavings of the “tudung saji” (food cover), “tikar pandan dan mengkuang” (pandan and mengkuang mats) as well as baskets reflect the artistic finesse in these handiworks.

    They are also unique, fascinating and full of ecstatic values that are increasingly hard to find this decade. The Clay and Indigenous People Gallery is an abundant source of collections and artifacts. Perak is one of the states which is home to a lot of indigenous people from the Proto Malay, Senoi and Negrito tribes.

    The Indigenous People Gallery in this museum is a window to displaying the great handiwoking skills of the aforementioned tribes. Of note is their astonishing display of creating clothes from wood pulp, their traditional musical instruments as well as their great sculptures and crafting arts such as mannequins and masks, adaptated countless times in medical and magickal ceremonies.

    Clay works displayed by the museum are traditional industrial products such as “labu”, “geluk”, “belanga”, “pasu bucung”, “buyung”, “kukusan” and “perasapan” all of which are well over 100 years old. The museum also organizes moving exhibitions, especially to schools around the Taiping township and nearby towns, usually upon request by schools who are interested.

    Among presented topics are Glorious Taiping and The Perak Sultanage.

    2016-6-26 霹靂博物館Perak Museum：座落在太平市博物館路，在太平監獄的對面，原本是太平市最早的錫礦開採地點，建於1883年。這座馬來西亞最古老的博物館，展示了動物學、史前、經濟及人神學上的相關資料。它擁有很珍貴的考古上的寶藏，如古代武器、原住民的各類器具及裝飾物品等。這些皆顯示了霹靂州豐富的歷史遺產。

    該博物館共有4個主題展廳，即A展區，是臨時展廳、B展區展出動物骨骼和標本，海陸空的動物都有，樣本都栩栩如生。C展區展出藝術遺產文物，如各種馬來傳統婚嫁、皇室儀式金銀飾物。這些金銀器樣樣都很精緻，保存得很好。以及D展區展出土著文化和陶器，有馬來族與各原住民的面具。馬來族都有戴著面具舞蹈的傳統，而原住民每逢禱神儀式皆會戴上不同面具來跳舞祝賀一番。

    博物館的外觀是一棟英式紅瓦白牆的建築，外頭矗立著一尊英人將領 R.S.F. Walker雕像，曾協助調停華工紛爭，對治理太平有功。館外陳列品還包括1969年澳洲政府贈送的戰鬥機，首輛太平火車廂，來自英國萊斯頓一位工程師設計的工程車，曾於1920-40年代，在拉律礦場操作鐵船的挖掘器。英國駐霹靂首任參政司J.W.W. Birch 被殺的紀念碑等物。

    館外還有各種大型展品英殖年代古董橋車、馬來民族的水陸交通工具，展區通道是陳列美麗海洋貝殼、生物標本，博物館出口處有紀念品販賣處。

    About Taiping Lake Gardens

    One cannot claim to have visited Taiping without taking some time off to soak in the natural beauty of the Taiping Lake Gardens.

    Built on top of an abandoned tin mine, the gardens were opened in 1880, earning them a place in the history books as the first public garden in then-Malaya. Huge ancient rain trees (“angsana”) line the lake; their branches stretching from one end of the road into the waters across, making the perfect backdrop for couples taking their wedding photos.

    Spread over 64 hectares, the Taiping Lake Gardens has ten scenic lakes and ponds, a Lotus Pool, charming bridges, tracks for jogging and reflexology, all surrounded by tropical plants, flowers, trees and wildlife. For kids, a roller-skating rink, paddleboat rides, and a playground ensure that the outdoors appeal more than the latest video game.

    Heritage structures surround the lush greenery of Taiping Lake Gardens, including the Old Residency, formerly the home of the Secretary to the Resident, the Raja’s House and army officers’ residences. The nearby Maxwell Hill (Bukit Larut) also makes an ideal place for jungle trekking and camping.

    The Taiping Lake Gardens (Malay: Taman Tasik Taiping) is the first public garden established during the British rule in Malaysia. The garden is located near Bukit Larut, and is equidistant to the town centre and the Taiping Zoo.

    History of Taiping Lake Garden

    The Taiping Lake Gardens was originally a mining ground before it was established as a public garden in 1880. The idea of a public garden was the brainchild of Colonel Robert Sandilands Frowd Walker. The garden was developed by Charles Compton Reade (1880–1933), who was also responsible for planning the Kuala Lumpur Garden town, together with Lady Swettenham.

    The abandoned tin mine ground was donated by Chung Keng Quee as a recreation park for public use. In 1884 the gardens were planted with grasses, flowers, and trees; a part of the gardens was fenced, to keep bulls out.

    The 64 hectares (160 acres) site was the first public garden in Malaya and was cherished for its beauty; it has been well-maintained since its opening. There are ten scenic lakes and ponds, which highlight the gardens. Along Residency Road, near the gardens, were golden rain trees (Malay: Samanea saman) or hujan-hujan (pterocarpus indicus) planted along the pathway.

    In George L. Peet’s A Journal in the Federal Capital, when he visited Taiping in 1933 he said “I know of no more lovely sight in this country than the Taiping gardens when the rays of the early morning sun are shining obliquely through their clumps of bamboo, palms and isolated trees scattered on islands among the expanse of water.

    One receives in that glorious half hour an experience of light in foliage that is quite unobtainable in England”.

    There are few private and government houses located near the gardens; among them are the Old Residency (home of the Secretary to the Resident), the Raja’s House at the junction of Birch Road and Residency Road and the army officers’ residences on Batu Tugoh Road. The gardens were so striking that they attracted many travelers to write of their beauty:

    The streets are shaded by rows of the angsena tree, which at irregular intervals bursts forth into a riot of blossoms, even more yellow than those of the laburnum.

    These it rains down in golden snow upon the streets, providing a carpet fit for a Sultan, for yellow is the royal colour in the East. With its golden snow, the angsena spreads abroad an almost overpowering scent, even more sweet than the smell of the pinang blossom. Most of the towns in Malaya have planted this Pterocarpus indicus as shade tree, but in Taiping it has grown to a greater height than elsewhere.

    Taiping I found simply awesome. I love everything about this city in the state of Perak in Malaysia. But if I had to say one thing only I would say: Lake Gardens. Yes, they are famous and beautiful and not for no reason. They are simple amazing.

    I love to go and walk around, getting lost in thoughts or watch animals – monkeys, monitor lizards, hornbills… In the mornings you see many people – mostly Chinese – working out, big groups of people training Kung Fu or running or doing Aerobics. A really nice spot that I hope you will be able to check out eventually.

    Taiping Zoo is the first zoo in the country houses over 2000 animals representing 160 local and exotic species. Visitors can observe these animals in their open-air enclosures during the day or opt for a night tour (Night Safari).

    Taiping Zoo is special in its own way. It is located in a lovely natural setting in Taiping Lake Gardens close to the foot of the Larut Hill (Maxwell Hill). The beautiful natural setting with streams, lakes and abundance of flora gives the zoo a unique advantage of being able to use nature to its best. ‘Taman Mergastua Sultan Idris Shah’ or the Taiping Zoo, which is located at the Lake Gardens in Taiping, is the only Zoo in the North of Peninsular Malaysia.

    With covering an area of 34 acres, the Taiping Zoo has embarked on an expansion program which includes the building of new “Open Concept” animal enclosures.

    Home of 180 species of animals

    Taiping Zoo is currently home to more than 180 species of animals totaling – 1,300 individuals. These include Tigers, Lions, Elephants, Hippopotamus, Giraffes, Hornbills, Orang Utans and others. Furthermore, attempts to breed these animals have been very successful. This has seen the proliferation of such animals like the Malaysian Tiger, Lion, Siamang, Deer, Nilgai, Night Heron and many others.

    The Taiping Night Safari is a first of its kind in Malaysia. Bathed in lighting similar to moonlight, the beauty and splendor of nature is enhanced. In an effort to maintain the experience of a natural environment, the Taiping Night Safari attempts to display nocturnal animals in natural looking settings. This provides the opportunity for visitors to appreciate and value the treasures of nature while enjoying oneself.

    Zoo Taiping mempunyai keistimewaannya yang tersendiri. Ia terletak di dalam kawasan semulajadi di Taman Tasik Taiping berhampiran kaki Bukit Larut (Maxwell Hill) Keindahan alam semulajadi yang menarik seperti aliran anak sungai, tasik, dan kehijauan flora menambahkan lagi keunikan Zoo Taiping dalam mempamerkan suasana semulajadi.

    Taman Mergastua Sultan Idris Shah atau lebih dikenali sebagai Zoo Taiping merupakan satu-satunya zoo yang terletak di sebelah utara Semenanjung Malaysia. Dengan kawasan zoo seluas 36 ekar ini, Zoo Taiping telah memulakan satu pembaharuan dengan memperkenalkan pameran haiwan dengan menggunakan konsep terbuka.

    Ia diperkenalkan dengan mengambilkira habitat asal haiwan tersebut. Pengunjung turut tertarik dengan keindahan alam semulajadi yang dipamerkan dengan pembinaan kandang yang sesuai.

    Zoo Taiping merupakan habitat kepada 1200 ekor binatang yang terdiri daripada 140 spesis. Binatang- binatang tersebut terdiri daripada Harimau, Singa, Gajah, Badak Air, Zirafah, Enggang, Orang Utan dan lain lain lagi. Tambahan pula, usaha- usaha pembiakan hidupan liar ini telah terbukti berjaya.

    Antara hidupan liar yang berjaya dibiakan adalah seperti Harimau Belang, Singa, Siamang, Rusa, Nilgai, Burung Kuak dan banyak lagi.

    The world’s first official Yasmin Ahmad museum (Yasmin Newseum Kong Heng Museum) that focuses on the works and legacy of our very own acclaimed film and commercial director.

    The vault at BookXcess Kong Heng Ipoh was owned by United Asian Bank and its origins can be dated back to the 80s. The tiles, vault doors and safety deposit boxes have been preserved in its original state to evoke its rich history.

    This time we had a chance to visit BookXcess Ipoh. The building was a bank in centre of Ipoh, the capital city of Perak, Malaysia. There is a basement at this bookstore that complete with the vaults. One of the vaults has become a gallery to remember Yasmin Ahmad, a legendary filmmaker in Malaysian film industry.
