    Deerland Park, Pahang 

    Deerland is located not far from the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary and Krau Wildlife Reserve, Bukit Tinggi. Yet another interesting animal center open for visit. This privately own 4 hectares deer farm has over 30 Indonesian deer (Cervus timorences). There is also sun bear, snakes, monkeys and etc. In the serene and untouched natural environment, you get a chance to interact with the smart yet humble deer. Apart from learning more about them, you also get a chance to feed and stroke the deer. Apart from that, there’s also ostrich, sun bear, snake and much more to keep you amused.

    Other attractions include a dedicated area to cultivate herbs and spices. There are over 40 species of herbs including the ever-famous Tongkat Ali which is believed to have medicinal properties. There is also knotted rope used to swing across the river by the adventurous heart. If not, enjoy the wooden walkway leading up to an observation tower at Bukit Rengit. Nearby attractions include the Elephant Sanctuary at Bukit Gandah and Krau Wildlife Reserve where you can bath and feet the elephants and see more interesting animals in Malaysia.     Ex-Situ Conservation

    Ex-situ Conservation Division is responsible to plan, manage, conduct and coordinate wildlife captive breeding program of threatened species, commercial breeding, wildlife rescue, wildlife rehabilitation and release of wildlife in captivity. This division is also responsible for providing veterinary services, conducting wildlife research and wildlife DNA analysis for enforcement and prosecution cases. In December 2015, the Ex-situ Conservation Division is officially operated in the National Wildlife Forensic Laboratory building.

    Krau Wildlife Reserve Pahang

    Krau Wildlife Reserve Pahang is the biggest wildlife reserve the Malaysian Peninsular and was established in 1923 with an area of 55, 159 hectares. Currently the area is 62,395 hectors after it was gazette again in 1965 and 1968. It is located nearby Benom Mountain in Temerloh District, Pahang and drained by Krau River, Lompat River and Teris River. The altitude of the reserve is 43 meters in Kuala Lompat to 2,107 metres from the top of Benom Mountain.

    Krau Wildlife Reserve Pahang: The main aim of the reserve is to protect wildlife especially Gaur that is present in large groups in areas that have been inhabits by the aborigenes. There are many Gaur in the Krau River valley and salt licks in the east and south of the reserve. There is a research station in Kuala Lompat that is well known for study on primates, bats and birds.

    Within the reserve Krau Wildlife Reserve Pahang, there are Institute of Biodiversity and National Elephant Conservation Centre located in the southern part of the reserve with an entrance through Lanchang. Jenderak Selatan Wildlife Conservation Centre is located in the east of the reserve bordering Felda Jenderak Selatan.

    Malaysia is one of 17 mega-diverse countries in the world, with a wealth of biological diversity in its terrestrial and marine zones. The flora of Malaysia is exceedingly rich and is conservatively estimated to contain about 12,500 species of flowering plants, approximately 306 species of mammals, more than 742 species of birds, and 547species of reptiles, including a large number of endemics.

    In order to safeguard the globally significant biodiversity, Malaysia has established networks of protected areas (PAs). In Peninsular Malaysia alone, there are at least four PA networks covering a total area of 2.98 million ha, managed by different agencies including the Federal Department of Wildlife and National Parks, Johor National Parks Corporation, Perak State Parks Corporation and state forestry departments.

    PAs under different networks are governed by different laws with varying degrees of protection status and gazetting and de-gazetting procedures. What is common between the different PA networks is that these PAs are largely characterised as sub-optimally managed and severely underfinanced.

    There are four main reasons for this:

    1. non-existent uniform system of national PAs under a common umbrella for achievement of biodiversity conservation goals.
    2. insufficient understanding of the economic value of the PAs and essential contribution they make to national development.
    3. insufficient incentives on the part of the state government to invest in PA management due to the perception that they are foregoing revenue generation opportunities through other forms of land use; and
    4. sub-optimal capacity at the PA management agencies for site management and PA system management.

     In order to remove these obstacles for optimal PA system establishment and management, the project aims to establish a uniform national wildlife PA system in Peninsular Malaysia and to establish a performance-based financing structure to support effective PA system management. Through a combination of interventions at Federal, PA network and site levels, the project will engender the introduction of system-level thinking, planning and management, supported by innovative, cost-effective and sustainable financing mechanisms.

    At the federal level, the project focuses on creation of a uniform wildlife PA system with standard criteria for establishment and effective management, development of the national PA system information and knowledge management system, and establishment of performance- based financing mechanisms.

    At the sub-PA network level, the project supports to increase management effectiveness of the PA systems and decreasing of financing gaps, ensuring that PA system management and business planning processes are linked to performance-based financing. At the site level, the project supports functional, technical and management capacity development in order for the individual PAs to meet the nationally set standards and access the financial incentive mechanisms.

    The interventions are expected to translate into improved management effectiveness in addressing growing threats to biodiversity from, inter alia, poaching and land-use change, firstly within 886,000ha of the terrestrial wildlife PAs. It is in turn expected to have an indirect impact on a larger 2.98 million ha of PA system including the protection forests within the Permanent Reserved Forests (PRFs), as well as the PA networks in the State of Sabah and Sarawak, through future application of the standards and financing mechanisms for those PAs.

    Overview

    Taman Eko Rimba Gunung Senyum or the Smiling Mountain Recreational Park, at 1,549 meters above sea level is an important archeological site. It is located on the Pahang Riverbank about 68 kilometers away from the town of Temerloh via kampung Awah and Felda Jengka 18, Pahang Darul Makmur.

    The park is a part of the Jengka Forest Reserve, which covers an area of 794 hectares. Surrounded by oil palm plantations of the Jengka Felda scheme, there are two main mountains within the park, Taman Eko Rimba Gunung Senyum and Gunong Jebak Puyoh, the former being a popular spot to tourist and researchers. Gunung Senyum is made up of limestone and rock, estimated to be around 3,000 years old, whilst the lowland on the east is made of mudstone and shale estimated at around 2,100 years old.

    Overview

    Lanchang is a small village where you can find an elephant sanctuary named Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre or the Elephant Orphanage Sanctuary. The elephant sanctuary was established in 1989 within the Krau Wildlife Reserve and is managed by the Malaysian Department of Wildlife and National Parks. Here many orphaned elephants are raised and given shelter. Not long after tourists found out about the elephant shelter the town quickly evolved into a popular tourist attraction. Kuala Gandah (Lanchang) is probably the best place on Peninsular Malaysia to come face to face with an elephant.

    Rehabilitating and relocating elephants

    Mainly due to agricultural development the elephants’ natural foraging grounds shrunk smaller and smaller over time. Finding food became more difficult and as a result some of the elephants were found in plantations and sometimes even in the small towns looking for food. As the Asian Elephant is an endangered species; people are encouraged not to kill or hurt the animals but to report them to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks so they can capture, rehabilitate and relocate the elephants to the larger national parks throughout Peninsular Malaysia (like Taman Negara).

    The past 25 years the staff at Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary (currently over 35 people work at the sanctuary) helped to prevent the further decrease of the elephant population by relocating over 400 wild elephants back into the wild. Some might say that the elephant conservation center is nothing more than a tourist attraction. Though this might be partly true, it also plays a big role into creating more awareness among the public (locals and tourists alike).

    Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre

    Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary: The Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre is an elephant sanctuary located in Temerloh in the state of Pahang, Malaysia within the Krau Game Reserve. The Centre was established in 1989 by the Malaysian Department of Wildlife and National Parks, and forms a base for the Elephant Relocation Team, which since 1974 has been rescuing problem Asian elephants whose habitats are being lost to cultivation or development and relocating them to suitable habitats such as Taman Negara.

    The Centre also aims to raise public awareness and support research and has increasingly become a popular tourist attraction since its existence began to be publicized in 1997. Visitors to the Centre are shown a video, then watch the elephants being washed and fed. This used to be followed by riding on an elephant but now, visitors are being given the chance to go into the river with two younger elephants. Daily visitor admissions are subject to strict quotas and advance booking is strongly recommended.

    What are the kid’s fun activities at Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary, Pahang?

    Families that are traveling with kids should not miss a visit to Kuala Gandah. Kids will forever fall in love with elephants after they experience the close interaction at Kuala Gandah. Visitors can witness feeding and bathing of the elephants, a great experience especially for children. To minimize stress for the elephants’ visitors can only see the elephants 2 times a day. Bathing of the elephants is only possible if water levels are high enough.

    Important to watch is the National Geographic Video documentary that is shown a few times daily; weekdays at 1pm, 1.30pm & 2pm (on Fridays only), weekends at 12.30pm, 1pm & 1.30pm.

    How to get to Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary in Pahang?

    It is roughly a two-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur (around 200km). There are organized tours from Kuala Lumpur, though you can also get a taxi or rent a car to drive there yourself. The elephant sanctuary is located along the East Coast Expressway between Kuala Lumpur and the city of Kuantan in eastern peninsular. From the main highway you get off at exit 816 Lanchang Interchange (Lanchang/Raub/Kuala Lipis). From there you can follow the signs to Kuala Gandah (or keep heading towards Lanchang). The sanctuary is opened daily between 10.30 and about 4pm.

    Mount Benom is 8th highest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia (First G11) located at Pahang. It can be accessed it via Sg Chalit, Raub (has two routes) and via Ulu Cheka, Jerantut (more distances). With distance 24km and 2107m ASL height being quite hard to do it by day trip, and we deserved it well, yeah!

    The results showed that the use of modern technology in the manufacture of traditional pottery craft Terenang at Temin Craft. This can be observed in the process of primary materials, the manufacturing process, the decor, and the combustion method. Temin Craft’s effort in utilizing the use of modern technology is a step that brings this pottery activity to another new level that can diversify the types and designs of Terenang as well as being able to increase the distribution amount immediately.

    However, this study suggests the need for a proactive and drastic efforts taken by the government toensure that this legacy will continue to be preserved in order to be appreciated by future generations.

    Abstract

    Terenang is one of the local traditional earthenware products in Peninsular Malaysia other than Labu Sayong and Mambong pottery. Terenang production activities centered in Kampung Pasir Durian and Temin Craft in Jerantut, Pahang. Along with the modern advancement, the manufacturing of traditional pottery is also experiencing changes in terms of technology usage as demonstrated through the Labu Sayong’s production in Perak.

    The use of modern technology in the manufacturing process is very helpful in preserving the activity of extinction in development. However, the question is whether the Terenang pottery production activity uses the same modern technology during the distribution process. This research uses qualitative research approach that captures descriptively through observation, interview and document analysis towards the Terenang production process at Temin Craft.

    More Information

    Mould/cast technique that has been applied help to mass produce Terenang and this really help in saving time and cost of producing it. The used of Plaster of Paris mould enable Terenang to be produced in different sizes according to its functions and customer’s need.

    Terenang is basically designed with no base and lid. But these two features were later added by the craftsmen from Temin Craft Village to embellish Terenang. Traditionally made Terenang did not come in standard size, but with years of experiences of these craftsmen, Terenang can be made accordingly based on requirement and on what function Terenang want to be used for.

    Terenang maker, Mohammad Zakaria, 48 said, Terenang can be produce in large quantity per day by using the mould technique. This time saving technique gives the craftsmen more time to focus more on decoration aspect. Previously, Terenang was decorated with design made by impressing the wood that has been carve with specific motif.

    Furthermore, the dipping techniques (teknik melicau) is the technique used to beautify Terenang. This technique will make the surface of Terenang looks like it was covered with wax and can be done with various colors. Besides dipping, Terenang can also be adorned with carving and dye technique.

    In recent time, the production of Terenang in Pahang has becoming more worrying since there is only one craftsman left after Hajah Noriah completely stop making it due to health factor. She and her friend, Zainal Idris has been producing Terenang based on order they get from local and international tourist and also from VIPs.

    Terenang is a hand-made legacy passing down from generation to generation and it is such a loss to see it ended due to no inheritor. Although there is some efforts by Kraftangan Malaysia, such as the establishing of National Craft Institute that offer a diploma course on pottery making but nonetheless, it brings no impact especially to the producing of Terenang.

    In the meantime, CMLHS lecturer, Dr. Hasnah Hussin said, UMP established Pahang Heritage Cluster as an effort to study the history and heritage of Pahang and hoping that outcome from this study will benefit the local community. She added, a conference on Terenang Ceramic Heritage will be held in August to lift the legacy of Terenang Ceramic up to international level.

    She really hopes that the State of Pahang will do their job in restoring and preserving the legacy of Terenang as what they have been doing to Pahang Weaving (Tenun Pahang) and become the exclusive craft of Pahang.

    Keunikan

    Taman Negara Kuala Tahan merupakan taman yang terbesar di negara kita dengan keluasan 4,343 km persegi yang menyimpan khazanah negara yang kaya dengan fauna dan flora. Semua hidupan liar dan tumbuhan tidak boleh diganggu bagi memastikan keindahan alam semulajadi yang asli dapat dikekalkan agar tidak pupus dan tidak musnah.

    Para pengunjung juga boleh melihat keindahan alam semulajadi melalui ‘Canopy Walkway’ iaitu sebuah jambatan yang dibina daripada tali, jaring, kayu dan kabel setinggi 25-meter dari paras tanah dan panjang lebih kurang 400 meter. Pengunjung-pengunjung ke Taman Negara ini biasanya akan tinggal dua hingga empat hari bergantung kepada aktiviti yang dipilih.

    Bagaimana untuk ke Taman Negara Jerantut?

    Pekan Kuala Tembeling adalah pintu masuk ke Taman Negara Kuala Tahan bagi pelancong yang memilih perjalanan melalui sungai. Di Pekan Kuala Tembelinglah, Sungai Jelai dan Sungai Tembeling bercantum membentuk sebuah kuala dan bermulanya Sungai Pahang. Kuala Tembeling terletak sejauh 16 km dari bandar Jerantut. Sebuah terminal baru sedang dibina bagi menggantikan jeti yang sedia ada.

    Melalui jeti ini pengunjung-pengunjung ke Taman Negara akan melalui jalan sungai sejauh 59 km dengan menaiki bot yang memakan masa selama lebih kurang tiga jam perjalanan. Pengunjung-pengunjung juga boleh menggunakan jalan darat melalui Felda Padang Piol dengan menaiki kenderaan pacuan empat roda terus ke Kuala Tahan dengan perjalanan lebih kurang satu jam.

    Apakah keunikan apabila anda mendaki Gunung Tahan, Pahang?

    Bagi aktiviti mendaki Gunung Tahan, perjalanan turun/naik memakan masa selama sembilan hari. Manakala bagi peminat aktiviti memancing ikan, Sungai Keniam adalah tempat yang paling digemari. Terdapat dua buah gua dalam kawasan taman ini iaitu Gua Daun Menari di Kuala Keniam dan Gua Telinga (gua batu kapur yang terbentuk oleh aliran sungai). Pengurusan Taman Negara, iaitu Taman Negara Resort turut menyediakan kemudahan penginapan kepada para pengunjung.

    Aktiviti Mendaki Gunung Tahan

    Terdapat 117 buah bilik (termasuk challet), sebuah asrama yang memuatkan 64 pengunjung dalam satu masa dan ‘visitor lodge’ di Kuala Terenggan dan Kuala Kenyam. Disamping itu, terdapat juga kawasan perkemahan, iaitu di KualaTahan dan Kuala Keniam. Khemah dan kelengkapan boleh disewa dari pengurusan taman.
