    Located on the fringe of Ipoh Padang is a row of pre-war townhouses that were used as legal offices and professional firms. One of them, number 7, was the residence cum-office of the Seenivasagam Brothers. The Seenivasagam Brothers, who championed the rights of the common folk, founded the Perak Progressive Party (PPP) in 1953.

    On July 23, 2017, the first ever Ipoh Cultural Parade was held in conjuction with Perak Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (PCCCI) 110th Anniversary and Visit Perak Year 2017.

    With total of 2296 participants, the parade achieved the Malaysia’s Book of Records as the largest cultural parade in Malaysia.

    There are 53 teams representing costumes, dances, heritage, music, martial art, and other traditional practices of our multi ethnic community as well as some of our more well known home grown commercial brands.

    Perak Hydro Building: Overview

    The building (Perak Hydro Building) was built in 1930 with a Neo-Renaissance Victorian-style, surmounted with colossal Greek and Roman columns. The Perak River Hydro-Electric Power Company was established in London in 1926 with the objective to supply power to the tin mines and tin dredge es in Kinta Valley, becoming the largest power provider in Malaya.

    The Perak Hydro Building Neo-Renaissance Victorian is now utilized by national electricity board, Tenaga Nasional Berhad.

    The Perak River Hydro- Electric Power Company was formed in London in 1926 to supply power to the mines and dredges in the Kinta Valley. The company was located at this building from the 1930’s. Perak Hydro Building Neo-Renaissance was once the largest power producer in Malaya.

    Perak Hydro Building Neo-Renaissance Victorian Style Malaysia

    The term “British Malaya” loosely describes a set of states on the Malay Peninsula and the island of Singapore that were brought under British control between the 18th and the 20th centuries.

    British Malaya comprised the Straits Settlements, the Federated Malay States and the Unfederated Malay States. Under British rule, Malaya was one of the most profitable territories of the Empire, being the world’s largest producer of tin and later rubber.

    The Pangkor Treaty of 1874 was a treaty signed between the British and the Sultan of Perak. Signed on 20 January 1874, on HMS Pluto, anchored off the island of Pangkor (off the coast of Perak), the treaty is significant in the history of the Malay states as it legitimised British control of the Malay rulers and paved the way for British imperialism in Malaya.     Since Kuala Kangsar is the Royal town of Perak, there’s a lot of British influence buildings and traditional Royal houses. In this video I highlighted a few that have significant impact on Malaysia, there are more significant sites that I did not show in this video.

    Even though Malaya got her independence in 1957, later joined by Sabah and Sarawak in 1963 and rename to Malaysia, the positive impact of British rule is apparent in:-

    1. 60% of Malaysia population can speak English
    2. Rubber – Malaysia produces a vast amount of rubber product.
    3. Tin – the British turned it into a huge industry. Mining Industry attracted many Chinese immigrant in the 18th and 19th centuries to work and develop the mine fields.
    4. Multiculturalism – Malaysia can boast a vast number of ethnicities.
    5. The food – The British did not change the local palate but the waves of migration, especially the Chinese, Indian and Eurasian (mixed of Europe and Asia parentage). With the local Malay and other local Ethnic minorities developed many fusions cuisines.
    6. Infrastructure – Railways system were built for growing exports.
    7. Architecture – When Malaya getting prosperous, many buildings and Infrastructures have been built. All these buildings funded from State Government or British Individual who became rich who had invested in rubber and tin.
    8. Education – The most important heritage – in a way influence the Malaysia education system.

    Tambun Sai Baba Cave Temple Location

    At the center of the Tambun Cave Temple’s back wall are large photos of Sathya Sai Baba.

    The temple is located outside of Ipoh in Perak Malaysia, near Tambun Lost World, just before the new Banjaran spa resort. It is called Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba Prashanti Nil Ayam, or more simply Tambun Cave Temple. It is the first such temple in Malaysia and was established more than 35 years ago.

    Tambun Sai Baba Cave Temple, Perak: Entering the Temple

    Temple in Malaysia – As you enter the temple, your eyes are immediately drawn to the brightly coloured statue of a seated Sathya Sai Baba, who had distinctive frizzy hair and was always clad in his trademark saffron robes. This statue occupies a prime spot in the room. A highly polished shiny reflective floor and whitewashed walls add to the brightness.

    Sathya Sai Baba has his right hand raised in a gesture as if greeting you, and the sign on the base of his chair says: “Om Sai Ram”. Sai Ram is a greeting, and it is said as a repeated mantra.

    In the centre of the back wall, there are large photos of the guru. These are surrounded by statues from other religions, which I found fascinating. Adjacent to Sathya Sai Baba is a colourful statue of the Hindu god Ganesh, a white Buddha, and a smaller statue that I think may represent the “first” Sai Baba.

    Fact File

    The Sai Baba Cave Temple is located in the northeast of Ipoh. It is near the Sunway Complex, and the Lost World of Tambun, and is immediately before the entrance to the Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat.

    The temple is open Sundays from 10 am to noon. The Tambung Cave Temple has a Face Book page.

    Is Gua Tempurung really 1.5 billion years old? If it’s true, the cave could be among the oldest existing natural features in the world.

    Tempurung Cave: The Studies

    Earlier studies by Perak’s state government on Gua Tempurung which is one of the top tourist attractions in the state, had estimated the cave’s age at about 400 million years old.

    However, head to the geology department of China’s Guangzhou Province’s Education Association, Zhou Shunbin who headed a delegation of 93 students for the visit believes it to be much older. The visit was jointly organised by Global Institute of Tourism and Tourism Perak.

Shunbin had based his claim on one of the rocks he spotted in the cave which is known as “meat rock” and according to him, takes at least 1,500 million years to form. A similar rock exhibited at a museum in Taiwan is not in its natural state as it has been polished.

    “We are impressed with the bio-diversity of this area,” he told Perak Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Hamidah Osman who welcomed the delegation which included 14 teachers and education department officials. Hamidah later told reporters that the state’s relevant authorities would be told to conduct a detailed study to ascertain the cave’s actual age. “We will also liaise with Shunbin to gather more information on his findings,” she said, adding that in China, such formations would be well protected.

    Hamidah also hopes the students would become mini ambassadors and promote Perak when they get back home as it could be a boost for Visit Perak Year 2012. The delegation is on a three-day visit also went for jungle trekking to the Rafflesia haven of Ulu Geroh in Gopeng and will head to Pangkor Island thereafter. Gua Tempurung is a 2km-long intricate cave system with honeycombs and chambers of various dimensions. The cave is concealed within majestic white marble and limestone hills and boasts a breathtaking gallery of stalagmites and stalactites and other amazing rock formations which are found only in this part of the world.

    A Chinese geologist visiting the cave on January 17, 2012, claims Gua Tempurung has existed for more than 1.5 billion years and now the Perak state government may soon conduct further studies to ascertain if it is really that old.

    Tempurung Cave is a must-visit if you like a cave or outdoor activity. It’s very big.. about 3km walk though. This is my first time went there. Located in Gopeng, about 24km south of the capital city of Ipoh in Perak, this limestone cave is one of the largest in Peninsular Malaysia. In this video, I will share the walk-through inside the cave so that you can see or imagine before you go there.

    If you have time, please visit this place and I’m pretty sure you’ll be amazed when you are inside the cave.

    About TT5 Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge

    Tin rush in Perak began from 1848 in Taiping. Perak became the wealthiest state in Malaya. Its capital Ipoh was fondly known to many as “The City of Millionaires”.

    Panning (‘mendulang’ or ‘melampan’) was the earliest method to source for tin ore. In January 1913, Malayan Tin Dredging (MTD) introduced the first dredge in Batu Gajah. The cost to build one dredge then was nearly RM 40 million and with 123 dredges in 1940, the total foreign investment for dredging industry was about RM 4 billion.

    Due to declined tin price, operations started to shut down and ‘floating factories’ were dismantled or sold off. Today, there is only one remaining tin dredge known as Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No. 5 or TT5. It was built in England by F.W. Payne & Sons in 1938, upgraded in 1963 and had continued its operation for 44 years until August 1982.

    In 1997, Malaysian Mining Corporation (MMC) donated TT5 Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge Kapal Korek Perak to the Perak State Government.

    Menteri Besar Incorporated Perak (MB Inc.) was mandated by the Perak State Government to conserve the last tin dredge in Malaysia in 2015. Located about 40-minute drive from Ipoh, TT5 is now fully open for visitors to experience TT5 Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge Kapal Korek Perak Guided Dredge Tour, panning and self tour inside the gallery and the magnificent view of the landscape.

    The Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No. 5 or TT5 is a former tin mining dredge in Batu Gajah, Kinta District, Perak, Malaysia.

    History of TT5 Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No. 5

    The dredge was built in England, the United Kingdom in 1938 by F.W. Payne & Son, a major dredge engineering company at that time. It was built for the Southern Malayan Tin Dredging Ltd., a company formed in 1926 which operated 6 dredges in total in Batu Gajah and Tanjung Tualang.

    TT5 was used for 44 years until 1982 when the Malaysian tin industries declined due to the falling world’s tin price, exhausted tin deposits and high operating cost.[1] In 2012, the facility was closed due to water leakage. Starting January 2015, the area is undergoing a MYR8.5 million renovation for 2 years which is carried out by Mentri Besar Incorporated.

    The dredge weights 4,500 tons. It is supported by a floating dock with 75 meters in length and 35 meters in width and 3 meters in depth.

    A tin dredge is like a floating factory. This one, named Tanjung Tualang Dredge No. 5, or TT5, weighs 4,500 tons and is supported by a pontoon of 75 meters in length, 35 meters in width and 3 meters in depth. It was built in England in 1938 by F.W.Payne & Son which, at that time, was a major design engineering company in bucketline dredges.

    Tin dredges work by scooping up bucket loads of tin-bearing soil at the front end, which then passes through an oscillating drum and a system of jigs and screens to extract the tin, before spewing out the waste material at the rear end through a number of chutes.

    This dredge was built for the Southern Malayan Tin Dredging Ltd, a company formed in 1926 which operated a further 5 dredges in the Batu Gajah and Tanjung Tualang area. TT5 was in operation for 44 years until 1982 by which time the Malaysian tin industry was in rapid decline due to a combination of exhausted tin deposits, low tin prices and high operating costs.

    All the tin mining and dredging activity which took place for over a hundred years has left behind a pockmarked landscape running for hundreds of miles down the length of Peninsular Malaysia. But the scars have filled with water and cleaned up quite well and now serve new roles as fishing ponds, wetlands, water features for housing developments and so on.

    The first package (RM5 for adults and RM3 for children less than 60cm tall) will include a movie, visit to the dredge museum and a tour of the dredge from outside.

    The second package (RM15 for adults, RM8 for children aged 12 years and above) features tours inside the dredge.

    Tempurung Cave is the largest limestone cave in Peninsular Malaysia and is estimated to be 400 million years old. Visitors to the cave can enjoy an exciting walk along the walkway and feast on the magnificent stalactites and stalagmites found in the cave.

    One of the biggest limestone cave in Peninsular Malaysia which is 1.9km long, located in Gopeng and believed to be in existence since 8000BC. The cave consist of five big dome. It is called ‘tempurung’ as the ceiling is dome in shape which resemble a coconut shell. each dome has different shape of stalagmite and stalactite.

    This cave was used by the communist terrorist as their hiding place between 1950 till 1960. However, in 1970, tin mining activities were done in the cave.

More than 3 km long, it is one of the longest caves in Peninsula Malaysia. Part of it has been developed as a show cave with electric lighting and walkways and there are a range of tours of different lengths and difficulty. A fine river cave, the river passage runs about 1.6 km through the hill. There are three very large chambers and some spectacular stalactites and stalagmites.

    There are plans to develop the surrounding area. By the end of 2006 a go kart centre and a horse-riding area had opened.

    Tempurung Cave is a must-visit if you like a cave or outdoor activity. It’s very big.. about 3km walk though. This is my first time went there. Located in Gopeng, about 24km south of the capital city of Ipoh in Perak, this limestone cave is one of the largest in Peninsular Malaysia. In this video, I will share the walk-through inside the cave so that you can see or imagine before you go there.

    If you have time, please visit this place and I’m pretty sure you’ll be amazed when you are inside the cave.

We straight away choose level 4 wet tour which will take us 4 hour 2 way back. We are guide by the ranger through the journey. It is not medium difficult level. Gua Tempurung is locate at Gopeng Perak Malaysia. It is suitable place to visit by family and tourist from other country.

    Kellie’s castle was named after its owner William Kellie Smith a Scottish planter. The castle was designed to replicate the great British Raj palaces in India with Moorish style arches and windows. He built the castle for his beloved wife, Agnes but was not completed when he died in 1926.

    Kellie’s Castle was meant to be a home away from home for Scottish Planter, William Kellie Smith in the 20th century. Being far away from home, Kellie desired his new residence to be reminiscent of his home back in Scotland. The castle is perched on top of a hill in what used to be a rubber estate.

    William Kellie Smith was an interesting man who was popular with his South Indian workers. Kind at heart, he erected a Hindu shrine for his workers on the castle premises. As a token of appreciation, his workers erected a statue of Kellie complete with a white suit and hat.

    Kellie’s Sudden Death

    Construction of this unique castle began in 1915. However, it came to an abrupt halt with Kellie’s sudden death in 1926. The solitary castle, looks almost surreal in these wild plantations of Perak, it projects a strong personality and an aura of mystery.

    Recently, efforts have been made by the Perak State Government to rescue this magnificent structure from the encroaching foliage. Besides being haunted, the castle is believed to have hidden rooms and secret underground tunnels.

    The road that leads to Kellie’s Castle follows the contours of the land in a dizzying, maze-like fashion, adding to the mystery and romance of the place.

    Pada awal tahun 1890-an, pengusaha British juga telah membuka estet-estet getah di sekitar Batu Gajah. Antaranya ialah Ladang Kinta Kellas, Ladang Kinta Valley, Ladang Harewood, Ladang Sengat dan lain-lain. Antara pengusaha British yang paling terkenal di Batu Gajah ialah William Kellie Smith dan Alma Baker.

    William Kellie Smith berasal dari sebuah kampung bernama Kellas di bahagian timur laut Scotland. Beliau datang ke Tanah Melayu pada tahun 1890 ketika berusia 20 tahun.

    Semasa di Pulau Pinang, beliau berkenalan dengan Alma Baker, seorang kontraktor di Kinta. Beliau kemudiannya berjaya di Batu Gajah sebagai pengusaha ladang getah Kellas Estate, Kinta Kellas Estate, dan lombong bijih timah Kinta Kellas Dredging Company.

    Kenali Kellie Smith dan Kellie’s Castle Secret Tunnel

    Di zaman kegemilangannya, hartawan Kellie Smith telah membina sebuah bangunan yang besar dan indah bagi kediaman keluarganya. Bangunan yang diberi nama Kellas House mula dibina pada tahun 1910. Bangunan tiga tingkat itu dibina mengikut rupabentuk sebuah istana di India.

    Tukang-tukangnya dibawa khas dari Madras. Bangunan yang mempunyai 14 bilik, sebuah cellar dan terowong rahsia itu juga akan dilengkapkan dengan lift iaitu yang pertama di Tanah Melayu. Di tingkat kedua, akan dibina sebuah padang tenis dengan lantai simen.

    Berita mengenai bangunan itu pernah disiarkan dalam akhbar London Financier pada 15 September 1911. Akhbar itu menyifatkan rumah ketua pengurus Ladang Kellas itu mungkin yang paling unik di seluruh Timur Jauh, baik dari segi bentuk mahupun besarnya.

    Spanish Flu dan Tarikan Kellie’s Castle

    Apabila Perang Dunia Pertama tamat, sejenis wabak Spanish Flu merebak dari Eropah ke Asia, sampai Tanah Melayu dan juga Ladang Kellas. Ramai pekerja ladang dijangkiti wabak itu meninggal dunia. Ketua pekerja meminta Kellie Smith membina sebuah kuil supaya mereka boleh mendoakan keselamatan pekerja dari wabak tersebut.

    Kellie Smith fasih bertutur bahasa Tamil dan Melayu. Beliau mengarahkan semua tukang yang sedang membina Kellas House supaya membina sebuah kuil baru di kawasan ladang berhampiran dengan jalan raya.

    Di bumbung kuil itu terdapat sebaris patung dewa Hindu dan di tengah-tengah barisan tersebut terdapat sebuah patung yang memakai pakaian pengurus ladang bangsa Eropah dengan topi putih. Kuil tersebut masih digunakan oleh pekerja Ladang Kinta Kellas hingga ke hari ini.

    Walau bagaimanapun bangunan Kellas House tidak dapat disiapkan pembinaannya apabila Kellie Smith meninggal dunia di Lisbon, Portugal pada 11 Disember 1926 ketika berusia 56 tahun.

    Sungguhpun Kellas House atau Kellie’s Castle itu hanya seperti bangunan dalam keadaan ‘sedang dibina’, namun keunikannya menjadi salah satu tarikan pengunjung ke Batu Gajah kini.

    Kellie’s Castle: Wikipedia Information

    Kellie’s Castle (sometimes also called Kellie’s Folly) is a castle located in Batu Gajah, Kinta District, Perak, Malaysia. The unfinished, ruined mansion, was built by a Scottish planter named William Kellie-Smith. According to differing accounts, it was either a gift for his wife or a home for his son.[citation needed] Kellie’s Castle is situated beside the Raya River (Sungai Raya), which is a small creek to the Kinta River.

    History

    In 1915, with the birth of his son and heir Anthony, Kellie-Smith started planning for a huge castle with Scottish, Moorish, and Tamilvanan Indian architecture.

    Kellie-Smith brought in 70 craftsmen Tamilvanan from Madras, India. All the bricks and marble were imported from India, too. Included in the plan for the 6-storey tower was Malaysia’s first elevator, an indoor tennis court and a rooftop courtyard for entertaining.

    During construction, a virulent strain of Spanish flu struck his workmen. When his workmen approached him to build a temple nearby, Kellie-Smith readily agreed. In return for his generosity, they built a statue of him beside the other deities on the lord murugan temple wall. It is believed that a tunnel was built to the temple from the castle.

    (Descendants of the Tamil labourers brought over to Malaya to work on the mansion still live nearby even now.)

    William Kellie-Smith died at the age of 56 of pneumonia during a short trip to Lisbon, Portugal in 1926. William’s wife was devastated and decided to move back to Scotland; construction on the castle was never completed by Tamilvanan workers. In the end, Kellas House, later known as “Kellie’s Folly” or “Kellie’s Castle,” was sold to a British company called Harrisons and Crosfield.

    Who haunts Kellie’s Castle?

    The Mystery of Kellies Castle Batu Gajah Malaysia

    Looming over the Batu Gajah countryside, Kellie’s Castle is an imposing brick structure to behold. It was built by Scotsman William Kellie Smith, who made his fortune in the rubber plantations of Malaysia.

    The mansion featured a tower, hidden tunnels, claustrophobic spiral staircases built as escape routes and what could have been the country’s first elevator. But Smith never finished the castle. He contracted pneumonia on a trip back to Europe to collect his elevator and died in Lisbon, aged 56.

    The castle was left to ruin before it was refurbished and opened to the public by the government. Some visit to see a piece of history while others come to find its possible supernatural inhabitants.

    The Malaysian Insight was given a special after-dark tour of the castle by its current manager, Zamari Muhyi, who regaled us with spooky tales that he and guests have experienced.

    After Smith’s death, his wife sold the estate and packed up her family to return to England. Despite sightings of apparitions believed to be Smith and his little girl, Helen, none of them died in Malaysia. So who really haunts Kellie’s Castle?

    Menara Condong Teluk Intan Is Malaysia Leaning Tower of Pisa

    Menara Condong Teluk Intan Malaysia is 25 meter high tower in the small Perak town of Telok Intan is Malaysia’s answer to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is not as old, nor as tall, nor as famous as its Italian counterpart but it does have a distinct incline and that makes a curiosity worth visiting.

    Menara Condong Teluk Intan Leaning Tower Perak Malaysia was constructed in 1885 by Mr. Leong Choon Cheong and some Ceylonese contractors. It was built primarily to store water for local usage during the dry season and in case of fire. Since it began leaning over due to soft soil foundations, Menara Condong Teluk Intan Leaning Tower has become a tourist attraction.

    Menara Condong Teluk Intan Leaning Tower Perak Malaysia is a 3 storey brick construction with a large steel water tank at the upper level. From the outside however it has been disguised to look like an 8 storey Chinese pagoda. Local people contributed to buy the clock from James W. Benson, Turret Clock Makers of Ludgate Hill, London. It still works and chimes every 15 minutes.

    About Menara Condong Teluk Intan Malaysia

    One of the main attractions is the Leaning Clock Tower. Menara Condong Teluk Intan was built by a Chinese architect Mr. Leong Choon Cheong and it also acts as a reservoir to supply water to the residents and also acts as a clock tower.

    This tower no longer holds water but the clock still functions and chimes every 15 minutes. The area surrounding the tower has been restored with bricks and now is being used as a plaza for various formal or informal activities.

    A road in the city centre of Teluk Intan is named Jalan Ah Cheong to recognize Mr Leong Choon Cheong who builts that tower.

    This clock tower is situated between the intersection of the square plaza which is Jalan Pasar and Jalan Ah Cheong with Jalan Selat and Jalan Bandar on left and right side of tower.

    Menara Condong Teluk Intan is built in 1892.

    Architect

    Unknown but according to records, “A hundred years of Ceylonese in Malaysia and Singapore” (1867-1967), Mr S.Sabapathy (Asst Engineer), P.W.D. Teluk Intan, helped in the construction.

    List of Donors

    A Chinese contractor known as Leong Choon Cheong and a Ceylonese contractor built and were the main donors. Donations from the residents purchased the Key Clock from London made by J.W Benson-Ludgatehill London.

    The Purpose of Building Menara Condong Teluk Intan

    Through research made on the Leaning Clock Tower that was known as Tall Clock, the reasons and motives of building it was as follows:

    • as a fire extinguisher in case of fire
    • as a reservoir for the residents in case of drought
    • to commemorate the British Administration
    • as Timekeeper and identity of Teluk Intan

    History of Ownership

    When contractor Leong Choon Cheong wanted to build this clock tower, it was undeniable that the British was the owner and the administrator at that time. After independence in 1957, this clock tower automatically becomes national property and now it is under the authority of Perak Government.

    During the Japanese administration, this building was used by the Japanese soldiers as a control tower to watch for enemies.

    Description of Style

    With careful examination, the Leaning Clock Tower has the biggest influence of Chinese Architecture. This is because of the Pagoda concept. Even if it was built during the British administration, the Chinese influence, donors and contractors succeeded to fight for their culture.

    It is obviously shown on the external façade like the gate, tiled roof and its tiled decorations, proves how rich the Chinese architectural and culture are. From the outside, this building looks like it is an eight (8) storey building; but actually, it only has three (3) floors.

    This clock tower has 110 steps that connect each floor that is 15.5′ high. The wonders of this building architecture is that it is made from wood and stone structure; there is a passage which is 6’ft wide with a 2’ft wide wall that is decorated with green stones.

    The detailed architectural and the planning of space can be seen from the adaption of its usage as a water tank on the 3rd floor that was made from pieces of steel as high as 16 ft and volume of 680 cubic feet. The bottom part on the building measures at central line 43 ft and it stands at 27ft upwards.

    Leaning Factor

    The building was built on a soft land structure and also the weight of the water tank that was holding water made it lean to the west.

    Walk: The LEANING TOWER of Teluk Intan, Perak – a National Heritage

    Menara Condong Teluk Intan Leaning Tower Perak Malaysia

    Built at the end of the 19th century, the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan or Menara Condong Teluk Intan in Bahasa Malaysia; was built to be a water tower to keep a reservoir for the dry season or in case of fire. Unfortunately, the ground was too soft to support the tower’s weight, which caused it to tilt or lean.

    Location wise, the Leaning Tower is in the center of a square surrounded by Jalan Pasar, Jalan Selat, Jalan Bandar and Jalan Ah Cheong. I personally find the best angle to view the leaning tower is from the Hong Leong Bank direction towards the tower.

    The tower is truly a sight to behold at night when it’s illuminated in a multi-color sequence. Definitely Teluk Intan’s most iconic landmark by a long mile. If you are visiting, do check out the many stores surrounding the leaning tower.
