History of Ubudiah Mosque

The Royal town of Kuala Kangsar holds historical values which are related to the colonial period. Among the attractions of Kuala Kangsar are the Iskandariah Palace, the Royal Museum, Ubudiah Mosque, Sultan Azlan Shah Gallery which are a must-see for historical buffs.

This magnificent Ubudiah Mosque is located beside the Royal Mausoleum at Bukit Chandan. The mosque stands proudly and majestically in Kuala Kangsar with its golden dome and minarets creating a spellbinding sight from near and afar. Sultan Idris Murshidul Al-Adzam Shah commissioned in 1913 the construction of a mosque of great beauty to fulfill a vow made upon his recovery from an illness.

The Ubudiah Mosque was completed in 1917, after the death of Sultan Idris, and was opened by his successor, Sultan Abdul Jalil Kamaratullah Shah (1916-1918). Occupied with four 126ft height towers and circulated with 60feets domes. The walls and floors were made of red and white marble which is specially imported from Italy and London.

Additions have been made recently to accommodate a larger congregation. However, details of the original design were retained to preserve the mosque’s character. The Ubudiah Mosque imposing structure is now a symbol of great pride to all Muslims in the state of Perak, Land of Grace.

Masjid Ubudiah – ranking high on the list of Malaysia’s most beautiful mosques, the Masjid Ubudiah (or Ubudiah Mosque) stands proudly and majestically in Kuala Kangsar, with its golden dome and minarets creating a spellbinding sight, from near and afar.

The mosque was designed by Arthur Benison Hubback, a government architect who is notably credited for the design of the Ipoh railway station and the Kuala Lumpur railway station.

Built in 1913 during the reign of the 28th Sultan of Perak, Sultan Idris Murshidul Adzam Shah I Ibni Almarhum Raja Bendahara Alang Iskandar Teja, the Masjid Ubudiah is located beside the Royal Mausoleum on Bukit Chandan.

It was commissioned on the orders of the Sultan, who vowed that he would build a mosque of great beauty as thanksgiving for recovery from an illness which plagued him in those early days.

The construction of the mosque was not without difficulties. Work was interrupted several times, once when two elephants belonging to the sultan’s and Raja Chulan were fighting and ran over and damaged the imported Italian marble titles.

The mosque was finally completed in late 1917 at a total cost of RM200,000 – quite an astronomical figure for those days. It was officially declared open by Sultan Abdul Jalil Karamtullah Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Idris Murshidul Adzam Shah I Rahmatullah, successor to Sultan Idris.

This imposing structure is now a symbol of great pride to all Muslims in the state of Perak.

Masjid Ubudiah, Perak is the most beautiful mosque in Perak is situated besides the Bukit Chandan Royal Mausoleum, Kuala Kangsar. Ubidiah Mosque was built at the royal command of Sultan Idris Murshidul Azam Shah, the 28th Sultan Perak (1887 – 1916) to fulfil his Royal Highness’ religious vow.

Perak Government then instructed Colonel Huxley from the Public Services Office in Kuala Lumpur to design the plan for the Ubudiah Mosque. The responsibility fell to Hubbeclk, a civil architect, and the building of the mosque was the responsibility of Caulfield who was Perak chief engineer at that time.

On Friday, 26 September 1913, Sultan Idris Murshidul Azam Shah, set the foundation stone for the mosque. The building activity was interrupted for a few years due to the damage to the marbles caused by two elephants belonging to Sultan Idris and Raja Chulan.

The order of the marbles from Italy was interrupted caused by the World War I.

In 1917, the mosque was officially opened by Sultan Abdul Jalil Nasaruddin Shah, who replaced Sultan Idris who passed away in 1916. The cost of building the Ubidiah Mosque at that time was estimated at RM200,000.
